# Chest memory

How Sorted remembers what is in your containers, how it stays up to date, and where it is kept.

## What is remembered

When you open a chest, barrel or shulker box, Sorted writes down what is in it, with its name if you gave it one. It is kept per world and per server, and survives a restart. Ender chests are not remembered: their contents are yours, not the block's.

## Staying up to date

* Opening a container again reads it again.
* A container that is broken is forgotten.
* On a server, a chest another player opens is marked as out of date, so it is read again next time.
* Sorts and transfers by Sorted update the memory as they go.

## Auto-scan

With [**Auto-scan nearby containers**](https://voxelsprout.com/sorted/wiki/settings#setting-auto-scan-nearby-containers) on, Sorted opens and closes containers within reach that you can see, without showing their screen. It skips containers it read recently. It is off by default.

Some server anti-cheat plugins notice containers being opened quickly. Only turn on auto-scan in singleplayer and on servers you trust.

## Where it is kept

In `.minecraft/cache/sorted/`, one file per world and per server. Nothing is uploaded. [**Clear current world cache**](https://voxelsprout.com/sorted/wiki/settings#setting-clear-current-world-cache) in the settings deletes the one for where you are.

* **Enable container cache default On:** Remember what is in the containers you open.
* **Auto-scan nearby containers default Off:** Read containers within reach without opening them yourself.
* **Cache staleness (hours) default 72:** After this long, a container counts as out of date and is read again.
* **Staleness counts default Auto:** Time in the world in singleplayer, real time on servers.
