# The six tools

One tree, the forest brush, the eraser, thin out, swap a ghost and pick ground.

The number keys pick a tool in paint mode. Each one shows on the tool bar at the bottom of the screen.

1: One tree. Plant it (hold and move for a row). 2: Forest brush. Paint ghost trees (hold and drag). 3: Eraser. Take out ghosts and trees you planted (hold). 4: Thin out. Take out about half the trees in the ring. 5: Swap a ghost. Another tree for the ghost you point at. 6: Pick ground. This block counts as ground, or no longer.

## One tree

Plants exactly where you point. The next tree shows there as a ghost. Hold the button and move to plant a row. Right click turns the next tree, R rolls another one.

## Forest brush

Scatters trees inside its ring while you hold the button: each where its crown has room, in groves with clearings between, neighbors of an age, species in patches. See [Spread and styles](https://voxelsprout.com/wildform/wiki/spread-and-styles). The scroll wheel or \[\] size it. Right click rubs ghosts out.

## Eraser

Takes out ghosts, and trees you planted this session. It never touches trees that were there before. An erase is a step in the history, so Z brings them back.

## Thin out

Takes out about half the trees in the ring. The tree closest to a neighbor goes first, and of a close pair the smaller one, so what is left is spread evenly.

## Swap a ghost

Gives the ghost you point at another tree of the same kind, for when one just looks wrong. It works on ghosts, before they are planted.

## Pick ground

Makes the block you point at count as ground for the brush, or no longer. G does the same with any tool. See [Ground and slope](https://voxelsprout.com/wildform/wiki/ground-and-slope).
