Shape and roots

The Shape and More pages: sliders for what the species normally decides, and growing one part again.

Every tree comes with the species' own values for its age and size, so each slider starts on a real number. Move one and the picker shows yours next to the species' own.

Shape #

Height: Of the species' own height at that age. 100% is as the generator grows it.
Trunk: How thick the trunk is at the base, in blocks.
Lean: 0% is a straight trunk. The higher, the more it wanders.
Crown spread: How far the branches reach sideways, in blocks. This sizes the wood; the leaves on it have their own slider under More.
Branches: How many main branches the tree grows.
Branch length: How long the main branches are, in blocks.

Leaf clumps: How big the clump of leaves on one branch end is, in blocks.
Leaf density: How much foliage the crown is given.
Airiness: Opens up the crown that is there: pockets and windows, so sky shows through the leaves.
Roots default species' own: The root system, with its strength next to it. Species' own follows the species as it ages.

Grow one part again #

Roots, Trunk, Limbs and Crown grow that part again with a new seed. The rest of the tree stays as it is.

Root systems #

The generator's root systems, by the names the picker shows:

Roots	What it grows
species' own	Follows the species as it ages. Most species change root system over their life.
none	Nothing above ground. The trunk meets the soil flat, the way a young tree on deep soil does.
shallow	Roots that leave the trunk and go under within a few blocks. The ordinary case.
surface	Long roots snaking away across the ground, dipping under and back out. Old oaks and maples.
taproot	One anchor driven straight down, and next to nothing on the surface. Pines, oaks, anything young.
buttress	Wall-like flares radiating from the trunk base, each carrying on as a surface root.
stilt	Short thick legs leaving the base of the trunk at an angle and bracing against the ground. Mangrove.
prop	Columns descending from the branches, thickening into pillars where they land. Banyan.
strangler	A lattice of roots spiralling down the outside of the trunk and fusing where they cross. Strangler fig.
breathing	A field of thin spikes standing in the mud around the trunk, thickest near the tree.
storage	A swollen base and short fat roots holding water against the dry season. Baobab, silk floss.
