Caves, the Nether and the End

Cave view, the depth bar with the ores of each depth, the Nether in layers or from its roof, and the End.

Cave view #

Off by default: many servers do not allow it. Turn on Cave view under Map in the settings. Underground, Charted then maps the caves around you in layers of 16 blocks, and the minimap fades over to the layer you are in, in its own cave look.

  • It only starts with real rock over your head: walking under a roof you built, glass or ice keeps the surface.
  • The world map opens on what the minimap is showing: the cave when you are in one, the surface when you are not.
  • Where a server turns cave view off, it stays off there. Your choice is kept for other servers.

The depth bar #

The depth cross-section on the side of the world map, with the ores of each depth

With cave view on (or in the Nether, with The Nether in layers), the world map's right side has a cross-section of the whole height of the world, as tall as a data pack makes it. It is drawn from the blocks actually found at each height, in their real colors, so every dimension looks like itself and modded worlds work too. It fills in as you explore.

  • The main layers are named, the heights numbered, the mapped layers lit and yours marked.
  • Drag along it, scroll over it, or press Page Up and Page Down for the layer above or below. Surface is at the top; in the Nether, Roof and Whole are there too.
  • A layer you have not been to fills in around you while you look at it.
  • Point at a height or pick a layer and the ores of that depth show as icons beside it.

The ores come from what lies open in caves, never from what is hidden in the rock. They say what the world has at that depth, never where, and only once a good stretch of the world was read.

The Nether #

The Nether is caverns stacked over each other, so by default the map shows the one you are in, darker where the floor lies deep and with lava glowing (The Nether in layers). Off, the map shows the ground under the roof as one map; on the depth bar that is Whole.

On top of the Nether roof #

Above the bedrock roof the map shows the roof: the bedrock and everything built on it, however high, so farms and roads stand out. The ground below only shows where the roof is not mapped yet. Roof on the depth bar picks it from anywhere.

The End #

In the Satellite and Atlas looks the End is islands floating in dark space, with a few faint stars and the islands' soft shadows on the void. End stone is a little cooler, with more relief.

Other dimensions #

The world map's Dimension list has the dimensions linked to where you are: on a server with several games, that game's own Overworld, Nether and End. Modded dimensions get a map of their own, and the depth bar draws them as they are.
